How to choose a clinic in Turkey

The quality gap between clinics in Turkey is significant. This guide explains what to check, what questions to ask, and which warning signs to take seriously before committing to any provider.

Verify accreditation — not just awards

For standalone clinics (dental, aesthetic, IVF), TEMOS International Healthcare Accreditation is the standard most directly relevant to international patient care — any clinic claiming TEMOS status should be verifiable on the TEMOS website (temos-worldwide.com). JCI (Joint Commission International) is the gold standard for international hospital accreditation and applies mainly to Turkey's major hospital groups, not standalone clinics — verify a JCI claim on jointcommissioninternational.org. National accreditation from Turkish health authorities is also meaningful. Social media awards, 'best clinic' badges, and unverified review platform icons are not accreditation.

⚠ Red flag: A clinic claims TEMOS or JCI status but cannot provide a certificate number or link to the relevant public directory.

Check the surgeon's credentials independently

Ask for the treating surgeon's name and specialty board certification before committing. Turkish surgeons can be verified through the Turkish Medical Association (Türk Tabipleri Birliği) or the relevant specialty association. Surgeons with European or US dual-qualifications should be able to provide those credentials. Reputable clinics encourage this due diligence rather than deflecting it.

⚠ Red flag: The clinic will not confirm which surgeon will treat you, or deflects credential questions entirely.

Ask what implant or material brand will be used

For dental implants, the specific brand matters — Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, and Astra Tech are internationally certified systems. Unbranded or unknown implant systems are a risk. For aesthetic surgery, ask about the medical device certifications for any implantable materials. For IVF, ask about the laboratory's certification and embryology team qualifications.

⚠ Red flag: The clinic cannot or will not specify the implant brand, or proposes a brand you cannot research independently.

Understand exactly what is included in the quote

A Turkish clinic quote that looks attractive may exclude anaesthesia, CT scans, lab fees, hotel, or transfers. Always request an itemised breakdown. Compare like for like: an all-inclusive quote covering hotel, transfers, and full post-op medication is worth more than a bare procedure price that will accumulate extras on-site.

Evaluate aftercare policies

What happens if there is a complication after you return home? A credible clinic should be able to explain: (1) their revision or complication policy, (2) how they communicate with overseas patients post-treatment, and (3) what documentation they provide for your home GP or dentist. A lifetime warranty on implants is only meaningful if the clinic has been operating long enough to honour it.

⚠ Red flag: No clear aftercare policy, no emergency contact, or refusal to provide post-treatment documentation.

Research independent patient reviews — not testimonials on the clinic website

Look for reviews on Google Maps, Trustpilot, or medical tourism forums (such as Patients Beyond Borders, Dental Departures). Reviews on the clinic's own website are not independently verified. Look for patterns — multiple mentions of the same surgeon, staff member, or process — rather than isolated positive or negative accounts.

⚠ Red flag: The clinic has only reviews on its own website, or all Google reviews are recent and uniformly 5-star with no detail.

Consider using a coordination service for complex cases

For simple cases, direct booking with a reputable clinic is reasonable. For complex cases — full-mouth restoration, bariatric surgery, fertility treatment, multi-stage aesthetic procedures — working with a coordination service that has pre-vetted the clinic and can advocate on your behalf provides meaningful additional protection.
