What you can treat in Istanbul

Istanbul's medical ecosystem covers most treatment categories sought by international patients. Clinics are specialist — a dedicated dental hospital is different from a general private hospital with a dental unit.

Practical Guide

What international patients need to know

Getting there

Istanbul has two major international airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) — the primary hub, handling most European routes — and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Most clinical facilities used by international patients are located near IST or in the European districts of the city. Your coordinator arranges airport transfers as part of the coordination package.

Where to stay

Clinics are spread across the city. Dental and aesthetic surgery clinics tend to cluster around Şişli, Nişantaşı, and Levent. Bariatric and fertility hospitals are often in or near Ataşehir and Kadıköy on the Asian side. NexWell recommends accommodation matched to your clinic's location and recovery requirements — avoiding a 40-minute commute to a follow-up appointment on day 3.

Language

International patient coordinators at accredited clinics communicate in English. Surgeons typically speak English; for complex consultations, interpreters are standard. Most premium hotels near medical districts have English-speaking staff. You do not need Turkish to navigate the patient experience.

Currency and payment

The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the local currency. Most clinics accept payment in EUR, GBP, or USD. Card payments are widely accepted. Treatment costs are generally quoted in EUR or USD for international patients, providing protection against lira fluctuation between enquiry and arrival.

Climate and best time to travel

Istanbul has a temperate climate. Summer (June–August) is hot and busy; spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable for recovery. Winter is mild, rarely below 5°C, and costs are often lower for accommodation. There is no 'bad season' medically — climate does not affect treatment outcomes.

Recovery and downtime

Istanbul has world-class hotels, proximity to the Bosphorus, and enough quiet neighbourhoods to suit post-treatment recovery. Patients frequently combine treatment with a day or two of sightseeing — but your coordinator will advise on what is appropriate for your procedure. Recovery from dental work permits more activity than recovery from abdominal surgery.

Why Istanbul

Why patients choose Istanbul over other destinations

Turkey has invested heavily in medical infrastructure over the past 20 years. The result is a cluster of hospitals and clinics in Istanbul that compete on quality — not just price — for international patient business.

The ceramics labs supplying Istanbul dental clinics also supply practices in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. The implant brands used are the same ones placed by Harley Street specialists. The difference is the labour cost and the clinic overhead structure — not the standard of care.

Many Istanbul surgeons trained in the UK, Germany, or the United States before returning to practice. Patient communication in English is standard at accredited facilities.
