Gastric sleeve revision: who it is for
Revision surgery is for people whose earlier weight-loss operation needs to be corrected or converted. The reasons differ from person to person, and only a review of your records shows which one applies to you.
- Weight regain. Weight has come back after a gastric sleeve or another operation, and the earlier result has not held.
- Weight loss that was lower than expected. The operation did not produce the change you and your surgeon were aiming for.
- Reflux after a sleeve. NIDDK lists acid reflux as a risk of gastric sleeve, so reflux that persists after a sleeve is something surgeons look at closely when they consider a conversion.
- Problems with a gastric band. Ongoing difficulties with the band, or a band that no longer works for you, can lead to a conversion.
Sometimes a revision is not the right step. Your surgeon says so after reading your report. Whether a conversion is possible depends on your case, your earlier operation and your current health.

Sleeve to bypass, band to sleeve and gastric bypass revision
Dr. Çaynak performs two conversions and also revises earlier gastric bypass operations.
Gastric sleeve to gastric bypass. The stomach was reduced in a sleeve operation. In the conversion, the operation is changed to a gastric bypass. Surgeons often consider this when weight has returned or reflux persists after a sleeve. The surgeon decides whether it fits your case.
Gastric band to gastric sleeve. The band is removed and the operation is converted to a sleeve. This is considered when the band is causing problems or has not given the result you hoped for.
Gastric bypass revision. This is a revision of an earlier gastric bypass. It is considered when weight has come back, or when there are problems with the pouch or the connection (anastomosis) made in the first operation. The surgeon decides from your records whether a revision fits your case.
If a case is not something the surgeon performs, you are told that after the review.
Not every revision is the right step.
The surgeon decides after reading your records, and a decision not to operate is a possible outcome.

Revision bariatric surgery abroad: 12 months of follow-up
- Your written plan lists exactly what is included. For weight-loss surgery at our contracted hospital, the package covers pre-operative tests, surgery, anesthesia, a hospital stay, hotel accommodation, dietitian visits, first-month medications, compression stockings and airport transfers. It does not cover flights.
- After you fly home, you get 12 months of remote follow-up with a dietitian.
- Weight-loss surgery means lifelong changes: a new way of eating and vitamin supplements. Your dietitian and surgeon explain this before you decide.
- If you have severe pain, fever, vomiting you can't stop or trouble breathing after you return, go to your nearest emergency room and tell them about your surgery. Don't wait for an online reply.
- The surgeon sets the stay after reviewing your records, and decides when you are cleared to fly.
Revision bariatric surgery in Turkey: common questions
Do you accept revision cases?
It depends on the case. Dr. Çaynak asks for the report of your previous operation before he accepts a revision, and he decides after reviewing it. The conversions he performs are gastric sleeve to gastric bypass and gastric band to gastric sleeve, and he also revises earlier gastric bypass operations. If your case is not suitable, you are told after the review.
Do you revise a previous gastric bypass?
Yes. Dr. Çaynak revises earlier gastric bypass operations. People ask about this most often because of weight regain after gastric bypass, or because of problems with the pouch or the connection from the first operation. He asks for the report of your bypass first and decides after reviewing your records. If a revision is not suitable, you are told after the review.
Which documents do I need to send?
Start with the report of your previous surgery, your current weight and your height. Recent scans, endoscopy results or lab tests help if you have them, and the surgeon's team tells you if anything else is needed. You do not need to collect everything before you write to us.
Why would someone convert a gastric sleeve to a gastric bypass?
Two reasons come up often: weight that has come back after a sleeve, and reflux that continues. NIDDK lists acid reflux as a risk of gastric sleeve. A bypass changes how the stomach and intestine are arranged, so the surgeon may consider it. Whether it fits you depends on your records and health.
Why would someone convert a gastric band to a gastric sleeve?
Usually because the band is causing problems or has not given the result you hoped for. The band is removed and the operation is converted to a sleeve. The surgeon decides whether this is suitable after reading your report and reviewing your current health.
I have regained weight after a gastric sleeve. Can surgery help?
Sometimes, but not always. Weight regain has different causes. The surgeon looks at your earlier operation and your current health, and tells you honestly whether a conversion is appropriate. No operation guarantees a result.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey, and when can I fly?
The surgeon sets the stay after reviewing your records. Most US itineraries connect through Istanbul, so flight time depends on your departure city. After surgery the surgeon decides when you are cleared to fly.
What are the risks of revision surgery?
Every surgery carries risks, including bleeding, infection and blood clots. The surgeon reviews your records before accepting a revision case. Outcomes depend on the assessment, the surgeon's experience and follow-up care. We cannot promise results.
Why is there no fixed price for revision surgery?
Every revision is different: it depends on your earlier operation, your current health and what the surgeon recommends. So the price is written for you after the surgeon reviews your records. Your written plan lists what is included, and flights are not included.
