Vaginoplasty in Turkey: Tightening, Recovery and Long-Term Outcomes

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the vaginal canal and repairs the perineal muscles and tissue at the vaginal opening. It is most commonly performed to address vaginal laxity that has developed following vaginal childbirth, particularly after multiple deliveries or births involving significant tissue stretching.

Functional indications include reduced sexual sensation or satisfaction related to vaginal laxity, air trapping or discomfort during physical activity, and structural changes that affect pelvic floor function. Aesthetic motivations, including concerns about the external appearance of the vaginal opening or the perineal region, are also addressed by the procedure.

Vaginoplasty is generally recommended after childbearing is complete. Future pregnancies after the procedure can stretch and compromise the repaired tissue, potentially reducing the durability of the result. Surgeons typically advise patients planning future pregnancies to defer surgery.

Vaginoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes one to two and a half hours depending on the complexity of the repair. The procedure tightens the vaginal walls by removing excess stretched mucosal tissue and tightening the underlying support muscles and connective tissue with sutures.

The perineal body is also repaired, which restores the separation between the vaginal opening and the anus and improves the structural integrity of the perineal region.

The incisions are located internally within the vaginal canal and at the perineum. Dissolvable sutures are used throughout, eliminating the need for suture removal visits. Most patients are discharged from the clinic the same day or after one night of observation.

Patients travelling to Turkey for vaginoplasty typically remain for seven to ten days post-surgery. This allows for the critical early healing period, drainage management where applicable, initial wound assessment and travel clearance consultation before the flight home.

Vaginoplasty recovery involves more restriction than labiaplasty because the surgical repair involves internal tissue and muscular reconstruction.

The primary restrictions are avoiding intercourse for six to eight weeks, avoiding exercise, heavy lifting and any activity that places strain on the pelvic floor for four to six weeks, and taking care with bowel movements in the early post-operative days by using stool softeners to avoid straining.

Most patients experience moderate discomfort for the first one to two weeks, particularly with sitting for extended periods. Swelling is most pronounced in the first two weeks and gradually resolves over three to six months. The final aesthetic result is visible at approximately three to six months.

Return to work depends on the physical demands of the job. Office work is typically possible within one to two weeks. Physical work or positions that involve sustained standing or lifting may require four to six weeks before comfortable return.

Vaginoplasty results are generally durable in patients who do not undergo subsequent vaginal deliveries. The repaired mucosal tissue and muscle layers maintain their reconstructed integrity over time in the absence of significant new stretching forces.

Natural ageing processes and hormonal changes, particularly those associated with menopause and declining oestrogen levels, can affect vaginal tissue quality and contribute to progressive laxity over years. Patients considering vaginoplasty who are approaching or in the perimenopausal period should discuss this with the surgeon, as the durability framing differs from that for younger patients.

For patients who undergo vaginoplasty and subsequently have a vaginal birth, a revision procedure is sometimes considered after the completion of further family planning. Non-surgical laser-based maintenance treatments can complement surgical outcomes in certain contexts and may be discussed as part of a longer-term management plan.
