Veneers are the fastest-growing cosmetic dental procedure in Turkey. But they're also the procedure with the most misconceptions. These 16 questions address real concerns: from tooth preparation to long-term maintenance.
Preparation, Pain & The Process
Do they shave down your teeth? Minimal-prep veneers: 0.3-0.5mm of enamel removed from the front surface only. Full-prep veneers: 0.5-0.7mm removed. This is less than the thickness of a contact lens. No-prep veneers (Lumineers): zero removal, but they add bulk to the tooth and can look thick.
Your dentist should explain how much preparation YOUR teeth need, it varies by case. Is the preparation painful? Done under local anesthesia, you feel nothing during preparation. Post-preparation sensitivity is common for 24-48 hours (temporary crowns protect the prepared teeth).
Final bonding is painless. How many appointments do I need in Istanbul? Typically 2 visits over 5-7 days: Day 1-2: Consultation, X-rays, digital smile design, preparation, impression, temporary veneers fitted. Day 5-7: Permanent veneers tried in, adjusted, and bonded.
Some clinics offer single-visit CEREC veneers, but lab-fabricated veneers typically provide superior aesthetics. What if I don't like the temporaries? The temporary veneers are your preview of the final shape and size. If you don't like them, this is the time to request changes: the lab can adjust the final veneers based on temporary feedback. Natural Look, Durability & Maintenance
Will veneers look fake? Only if poorly designed. The 'fake teeth' look comes from: too white a shade (BL1/BL2 instead of natural A1/A2), uniform shape (no natural variation between teeth), over-sized proportions, or opaque material (cheap porcelain without translucency).
E-Max veneers in natural shades, with proper proportional design, are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. What shade should I choose? A1 or A2 for a natural bright smile. B1 for slightly warmer. BL1/BL2 for maximum whiteness (celebrity/TV look: can look artificial in everyday settings).
Your dentist should hold shade tabs against your face in natural light, not just clinical lighting. How long do porcelain veneers last? E-Max: 15-20 years. Zirconia: 20-25 years. Composite bonding: 3-5 years.
Porcelain doesn't stain: the shade you choose stays for the life of the veneer. Can veneers crack or chip? Chipping rate is 2-3% at 10 years for E-Max. Avoid: biting ice, opening bottles with teeth, biting fingernails. Night grinding (bruxism) is the biggest risk: if you grind, you need a custom night guard.
